Official First IPL Battle: VS Csilla

Shinka VS Ichabod
(Alealia's)

 Shinka VS Ichabod
(Csilla's)

"Csilla:
A very humorous piece, Ichabod's face always gives me a giggle! Your perspective is wonderful and really makes the piece more dynamic and engaging. A quick note on brushes since you mentioned it in your artists' comments; many artists here on dA make their own brush packs for people to download that are compatible with GIMP. I personally downloaded a grass brush pack and it works like a charm. I don't know much about Sai or Photoshop, but GIMP is compatible with many brush packs available for free on dA. You can make your own brushes, but GIMP's program is not terribly sophisticated enough for something that complex. For a sandy effect you can also play with an effect called “noise” which give a texture similar to what we call “snow” on a television screen. Type in things like “sand tutorial” on dA, I'm sure you'll find plenty of great tips. Also keep an eye on yoru shading and lighting. Swift is depicted as a very bright attack, and the brighter the light, the darker the shadows. Play around with your light and dark colors or dodge/burn tools to give your piece a little more depth. You study of small dogs really paid off, Shinka turned out very well.

Alealia:
I really like your lighting, and dramatic shadows, they give your piece a lot of dept and action. I do wish you had played with perspective a little more. The piece loses some luster because the characters are the same size, though I get the feeling that Ichabod is much closer to the viewer than Shinka. I think you should do a quick study on animals running. I can't really tell which of Shinka's feet are which, and the direction of the feet conflicts with the direction of the dust cloud. The dust clouds and varying sizes of Swift are wonderful. I'm especially fond of the crisp definition in the stars, they look strong yet fragile enough to shatter when crashing against its target.

Verdict:
Both piece show great skill in different areas, and are fun and engaging. Ultimately, I award Alealia the victory for her dramatic lighting and sense of movement and speed."

Yay, I won! These judgements are so helpful! I will train harder!
