Official Second IPL Battle: VS Suika

Ignis VS Yggdrasil
 (Alealia's)

(Suika's)

"Suika: There is a lot of movement in this piece, and the overhead composition is one that's worked out very well here. You might want to move around the trainers (they're a bit too close to where the Mismagius is, making a bit of an awkward tangent) but for the most part, this is a successful entry. Good job.

Alealia: Your piece attempted to handle this splash challenge in a sequential way, which is always interesting to read. However, the panels could be laid out in a less confusing manner, and while the pokemon are drawn fairly well (although you could push their actions and their poses a bit more), you cannot cut corners on the background. The background is clearly the same photograph with the same filter slapped on it, and it hasn't been resized or altered enough to pass for anything but a photoshopped photo.

Also, if you're doing a sequential rendition, try out different angles for each panel. Keep the flow going, and keep the viewer interested.

WINNER: Suika

I was a little disappointed with the  feedback because I hadn't filtered my background. Iexplained this to Judge Toh Fu and she gave me revised feedback:

"It is true that I didn't catch the addendum in the artists' comments that mentioned how you took the photo yourself and vectorized it, and instead assumed that it was a Google grab + filter. I've seen the like way too many times before, and therefore did not give you the benefit of the doubt like I should have.

However, I do believe that more could have been done with the background in terms of making it interesting, as well as making the whole piece "flow" better. If you're going to go for a sequential take on this battle, it's always good to push your angles and paneling.

For instance, if you wanted to really keep the photo background, it would have been better to use multiple photos of the same area from different angles, in order to fit the actions taking place in each panel better.

Instead of making each of the "pokebattle" panels utilize the same side view, full-body composition, you should try mixing things up in order to keep the piece from feeling too flat.

The "style" of the vectored photos doesn't quite fit with the drawn elements as well, and should be pushed further to fit the more stylized characters--or the characters should be more realistic to fit the background.

Out of all the judges, I am probably the harshest--this is because my background is in various leagues and institutions that utilized very harsh and honest critique. It's not what a lot of people are used to, and sometimes it comes off as a little too much.

However, I never say anything without good reason, and one should never mistake any critique I give for a direct attack on your art, your work ethic, or you as a person. I hope that you continue to participate in the IPL, and that you do not think badly upon the rest of the administration team or your opponents because of this incident.

I'm very happy with the result! I know towards the end my battle plan was rushed! I will train harder until the next time!
